The high elevation we call Big Ridge is but a small part of the
vast Mountain called Allegheny. Big
Ridge rises immediately to the east of Tuckahoe, and is skirted to the south by
Cove Creek and towers above Route 311 to the East. To the North the ridge reaches just south of where Allegheny
Tunnel bores through the mountain. At
an elevation of about 3600 feet at its highest point, Big Ridges towers about
1500 feet higher that the Peniel IPHC Church down in the valley. Big Ridge is secluded and unknown to all but
relatively few people. These few people
are mostly those with roots on the mountain.
The mountain is a
beautiful but unforgiving formation of rock covered with vegetation of all
kinds. But, this page is not about the mountain.l It is about the people. It is about their origin, their struggles,
and their families. For as many as possible, I will include their genealogies.
In her book Saga of the Mountain, Eleanor Fridley has
provided some barebones information adding families to those that I have
already researched. She has given me
the sources for further research with her list of families. Many of the names in the list were pet or shorten names and there were no dates. I had to use a good deal of guessing to finally locate them in the census. Never the less, the list helped me to know who lived on the mountain. I am indebted to Mrs. Fridley and will I
give her credit for her material that I use.
.....Note: The genealogical material for this site, except for the Sparks, Cox, and Hilton Families, which I already had, was obtained by entering each name, form the barebones list that Mrs. Fridley provided, into Ancestry.com. Most of the information from Ancestry.com came from census records along with other public records. As a paid member of Ancestry.com, I have access to the public records posted there as well as for the ancestry files shared there for member use. Ancestry information, including the census is never perfect and is always subject to change when better information becomes available. Information on this page, comes comes from contributers from Ancestry.com, public records, from Mrs. Fridley, and from my friend Woody Cox. Mrs. Fridley often used pet names which I have to vertify.

.....You may wonder why I chose the photo at top of the page. I made this photo a number of years ago at the Cox/Cayton Cemetery on the Southern face of Big Ridge. It is mountain laurel and it is deadly and symbolizes the struggles of mountain and country people. Before its deadly secret was revealed, it was the slayer of many women and children in the backcountries of the Eastern United States. Untile the danger was realized, cattle were allowed to roam in the woods where they ate the laural. The laural's poison infiltrated the milk of the caw and caused what was onece called milk sickness. This poisoned milk was cunsumed by the mountain folks... expecially the children and the mothers. If a mother was nursing, she passed the poiion on to her infant. The children, infants, and mothers sickened gradually and died. And, no one knew what they were dying from. They just knew that it was from the mil so they called it "milk sickness."
.....It has been suggested that Big Ridge was setteled by deserters from the Confederate Army. I am not sure that that is true. There may have been at least one who was evading the Confederate draft. Bot the North and the South were drafting men into the army. Some went west to avoid the draft. It seems that many of these famlies came to the mountain after the war. After the war, conditions in the south were harsh. The whole complexion of Monroe County changed as a great percentage of the population moved west. Monroe County has never recovered. If you fought for the South or supported the Confederecey, you were disinfranchised. You couldn't vote, hold office, or teach school. This law was not repealed until about 1871. Some famlies, instead of going west, moved to the mountains. Some came to Big Ridge.
.....In some of the old photos, you will see open fields. For the most part, these fields are now wooded. Sites, like some cemeteries, that once were in the open, are now deep in the woods. This is true for the whole area of Southeastern Greenbrier and Nnothern Monroe Counties. Is is true of the old farm that I live on. When folks cease to "run" livestock, the fields are soon reforested. Now the only livestock are deer, bear, and now mountain lions.
.....
.....
.....This is the Antioch Primitive Baptist Church. It sits at the intersection of the main Big Ridge road and the road that leads over the mountain to Sweet Springs. For many years, after the folks left the mountain, a homecoming was held each year at the church. I am not sure if the homecoming is still held. There was singing in the services but usually, as was the case in most Primitive Baptist Churches, there was no music played. Some folks called Primitive Baptists Hardshell Baptists.
........
.....The churches were important to the rural communities, but the schools were the heart of the community. Country folks gathered here for all kinds of socials, debates, and for spelling bees. Children learned practical things of life in the 4-H clubs. Christmas plays and padgents were held in the one-roomed schools. The rural school was the frabric that held the community together.
.....These tow photos show the Big Ridge school. One is from Mrs. Fridley's book and the other is one I made several years ago. When I made my photo the school had been made into a private home or camp. Many old schools have been preserved in this way while others are falling down or been torn down.

.....This is another photo from the book showing the school and church from a high point. Elizabeth Sparks was born in a house below this point across the road from the church.
.................
.....To me, this is the picture of the rough life our ancestors lived. They were often attacked by things that they could do nothing about. The "milk sickness" that finally done communities in was the Great Depression and the dying of the rural economy. But, it was a good life for many years and supported many strong mountain famlies."We're Headed For Missouri."

The Sparks Family

.....The Sparks Family came to Big Ridge from Jeffersonville, Tazewell County, Virginia. Members of the family still live in Jefferesonville. The oldest Sparks to come to Big Ridge was Jonas Sparks. Jonas is one of 15 Jonas Sparks that I have in my Database. The oldest is Jonas who was born in 1734 in Rowan County, North Carolina.
.....One interest item of information, to me, that I found is that my late good friend and fellow pastor Russell Spence's great grandfather Jonas Spence also lived in Jeffersonville. Not only did he have the same first name as Jonas Sparks, theyboth served in Company D, 23rd Battalion Virginia Infantry. Jonas Sparks also served in the 188 Virginia Militi.
.....According to the census, Jonas moved back in Jeffersonville as he was there at least by 1910.
..................
.....According to the Mrs. Friedly's book, this was the log house of Joseph Sparks.

Joseph Sparks was a Primitive Baptist Elder or Minister. He pastored a church at Glace. It is reported that would ride on horseback as far away as Bluefied, West Virignia to preach.

.....Lizzy was like a mother to me. My family spent a lot of time in her and Hillman's home. We went there every Christmas for years and we still go there to vist Woody on Christmas. We enjoyed her good country cooking. Until she had her first stroke, there was alway good rich county food. They usually had salt cured pork. After she had her stroke, there sas not so m uch of the salty food. I tasted my first "coon" meat at their table.
.....Company was alway welcome as Lizzy had the spiritual gift of hospitality.
You knew that you could just kick your shoes off and relax. At some places when the preacher comes for dinner, the good china and the good silver comes out and it is more formal. But, at Lizzy and Hillmans, you were just ffamily. Many folks would come for Sunday dinner (lunch to some of you). After dinner, the table would be coverd and the food left out. For supper (county people have supper) the folks who were still there just helped themselves. After supper, it was time to get ready to go back to church.
.....I remember the day that Lizzy left us. I received a call that Lizzy was on the way to the hospital in an ambulance. That was a trip of about twenty-two miles from the head of Tuckahoe. I went on to the Emergency Room and waited awhile before Lizzy arrived. After she arrived, I had prayer and told her that I had to go pick my wife up from work. She thanked me for coming. I didn't think she looked too bad.
.....The weather was hot...sticky hot. After I had picked my wife up and had returned home, I went out to the barn to check on our old goat who was ill. While I was in the barn, my wife came to the door of the house and called me. The said that she got a call from Woody telling her that his mom had just died. I was angry. I was so angry that I kicked the barn. It is not an easy task to pastor a country church where people become family.
.....We drove to the hospital to pick up Woody. Carolyn followed us we drove back to Tuckahoe. We stopped at Woody's cousin Buck Cox's for awhile before going back to Lizzy's home. It was a bad time. After I had finished the service at Dowdy Cemetery, Woody and I walked back to the cars arm in arm crying every step of the way. Lizzy was a jewel.

They lived on Barker's Ridge in Wyoming County. I do not know just how Mary Ellen came to this part of the country. I do know that her husband Matthew Cod had probably left her before 1905. That left her to survive on the mountainthe best way she could. Somehow she raised her children back on the mountain. Knowing the conditions she lived in, I have a deep respect for Mary Ellen Cox. But, her situation was not unique. It was the lot of many mountion mothers.

.....Bill was the one of the most interesting men that I have ever known. The first time I saw him, he was wearing a long black skirt. Some time before, he had been in a logging accident. Bill and his son were cutting timber back in a hollow when Bill cut a tree and it fell into another tree. The cut tree was in a dangerous bind. Buck told Bill to leave it alone, but Bill didn't listen. He tried to free the tree, but it snapped back and crushed his legs. He had healed somewhat, but he couldn't stand the touch of trouser on his legs, so he wore the old skirt.
.....Bill was the number one story teller in the Area. One old man who lived further down the hollow told me, "That Bill Cox is the most awful liar I ever heard." But to a fellow spinner of yarns like myself, he was a great story teller. He could tell the story as though he believed it...and sometimes I think he did. My favorite was one of how the railroad kired him to kill the hoopsnakes that were killing the workers. Bill lived to a ripe old age and I was blessed to have his funeral." Bill, Buck (Andrew) and Buck's wife Siss (Mary) are butied in the Fuery Cemetery in Tuckahoe.

Buck once worked in the woods cutting timber. But in later years he had his own garage. He was an excellent mechanic. Buck was a typical mountain man, but Siss was from Pennslyvania. They both had a cood sense of humor. Like most mountain men, Buck would be loyal to you as long as you treated him right. But, if you mistreated him, you could forget it. That is the way of most mountain folks. Outsiders learn that at their loss.

.....Daniel Hillman Cox was a rough and tumble mounain man who lived up to his name Hillman. Some say his mother weaned him on spoonfulls of whiskey. Soo, if that is true, it was no wonder than it was a struggle for him to leave alcohol alone. He could be rough indeed when when he was drinking. When he was sober, it was a different story. But, drunk or sober, he was my friend. He Woody and I would go fishing together. We would pitch horseshoes together. We would sit and talk. I liked to listen.
.....Hillman, Lizzy and Woody, when he got big enough, would cut timber back on the mountain and snake the logs out with a horse or mule. It was a rough life. Lizzy and Woody were able to get jobs at the Greenbrier Hotel and things became better.
.....But, Hillman still had a yen for the hardstuff. We think that he and his buddies were making their own. Hillman and his nephew died tragic deaths up on Kates Monuntain one cool spring morning from exposure. We think that they had hd some bad moonshine. The morning I had Hillman's funeral, I cried in my shaving water. I had lost a friend in a way that was frustrating.

.....Rass was a man who had a sense of humor, He was my friend. He once told a story to me of how one night he was going back home one night on Big Ridge from courting. He had borrowed an oil lantern that didn't work very well. The light kept going out. He tired of fooling with it so he decieded that he would do without it. After going some distance, Rass suddenly weht head over hills over something that moved, made a noise and then stood up. Scard, he his hands shook as he lit the lantern. There standing staring at him was a big jersey cow. I enjoyed being with Rass and I miss him. He performed the funerals for both him and his wife Ruth.
